Texas Hold'em Poker - Changing Gears

Texas Hold'em Poker - Changing Gears

Play poker long enough and you realize that a tight aggressive strategy is not always the best course of action. A tight aggressive strategy works against calling stations but how to you defeat other tight players? If you ever watch the top pros play online, you will notice that all of them play very aggressive. Usually they are the raiser pre-flop and bettor on the flop. Playing tight against another tight player is not sufficient enough to win chips. In order to defeat the tight players at your table, you have to play more aggressive. When you are in position, you should be raising their blinds and betting the flop. Continue to be the aggressor when you are in position and your opponents will get frustrated. When you notice they are getting frustrated, it is time for you to change gears. A frustrated opponent is more likely to call with marginal hands and play back at you with all types of hands. Recognize when your opponent is frustrated and start playing tight.

The next time you enter a pot, your opponent will think you are being aggressive with a garbage hand again. This time your opponent doesn’t know that you have a really good hand he’ll most likely lose a big pot. Changing gears requires a lot of practice and emotional control. Learning how to change gears may be one of the toughest skills to learn in poker. Challenge yourself to become a better player by dropping down a limit and play aggressive. Try raising every pot when you are in position. Observe how your opponents react to your aggression and when you should change gears. Over time you will develop a feel for the game and gear changing will be automatic. The ability to change gears allows you to take chips from every opponent at you table.
